POETRY SLAM hosted by Katie F-S!
— Mick's has been the famous home for some of Omaha's most cutting-edge poetry, including nationally-ranked award winners. We're back with the real, raw deal, on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Our authentic slam features two teams milking your winning vote! Hosted by the incredibly talented Katie F-S. This is an early show: 7:30pm.

9:00pm: KOREY ANDERSON — Anderson's silky, Smokey Robinson voice and true Americana songcraft win new fans every week, and Korey never stops surprising us with his great new material and creative interpretations. Fantastic night of live music, and it's free!

Thursday May 8, 9:00pm, $5

MATT COX — Foot-stomping blues & old-time country, inherently raw and real, Cox performs with a rarely found authenticity, and his shows are among the most talked about evenings of the year. His latest CD Folker’s Travels hints at everything great about the likes of Neil Young, John Prine, and fellow Iowa native Greg Brown.
THE STARLINGS — The Starlings are an Americana duo known for their striking harmonies and melodic songwriting. From a pin-dropping ballad to a foot stomping barnburner, their images linger—empty boxcars, twilight on the prairie, divining rods, river beds and the long drive home.

Friday May 9, 9:00pm, $5

STEPH TAYLOR — Steph Taylor has been described as a musical poet, creating a complete sensory experience through sound. Her Omaha fan base is growing fast, thanks to a uniquely percussive approach to piano complimented by a flirtatious guitar style. Her smoky-soulful voice lends itself to the emotional quality of her music. But while her presence is undeniably striking, her humility.
CHRIS KOZA — Winner of the 2005 Minneapolis Music Awards New Artist of The Year, Chris possesses surprisingly mature songwriting skills that have already earned him some hefty comparisons. Some say they hear a Paul Simon influence and others claim threads of Ryan Adams or Wilco. Critics have been daring to declare him the next Mason Jennings or Conor Oberst.
"...an under-the-radar-musical-stunner phenomenon." — Pulse of The Twin Cities

"Artists like Elliot Smith, Iron & Wine, Bright Eyes and Nick Drake stand above other songwriters because their songs are born of genuine passion and joy. If Koza continues writing songs like these, his name will be bandied about in that company." — Music Liberation Project

Saturday May 10, 9:00pm, $5

THE WHIPKEY THREE — Combining forces of two of Omaha’s most recognized bands, Matt Whipkey and Anonymous American, and Sarah Benck and The Robbers, The Whipkey Three balances melody, aggression, subtlety and power.
Opening tonight's show, don't miss the special performance by brothers Chris and Korey Weber of THE GROUND TYRANTS.

Wednesday May 14, 9:00pm, $5

MELISSA GREENER — One of the standout surprises at Mick's last year: stunning talent, energy and charisma in the vein of Bonnie Raitt or Sheryl Crow, maybe Sarah Borges. Just won Atlanta's Eddie's Attic songwriter competition, which is a national honor. Greener has lived and performed in Tel Aviv, Montreal, Halifax, and the Jianxi Providence of China. But it is American cities like San Francisco and Nashville that make their way into her music. She moves beyond the basics of Americana to capture the essence of American pop with influences like Shawn Colvin, Lucinda Williams and Ani Difranco, as well as such greats as Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell.
Greener's style is one of poetic lyricism matched with honeyed melodies and down-to-earth delivery.

Mickster of The Week:

Recognize her? She was in Mick's about a year ago.
